You Do Not Have To Label Your Gifts

Are you worried about finding your true identity and feeling pressured to label yourself? If you think you need to fit into a specific category or officially define your spirituality, you don’t. It's natural to want to fit in and be accepted, but trying to conform to a label can limit your future growth. Over the years, many of us are drawn to different things, and our practices, beliefs, intentions, and interests evolve with us.

Labels are like sticky notes; you spend so much time trying to keep them sticking. When you decide to fit into a particular box, it can create internal resistance to change. Labeling yourself can make it easier for others to dismiss your beliefs, which is likely the opposite of what you want.

Growing up in a church in a small Alabama town, I was taught to identify as a Christian. However, I never truly felt like one, but I adopted the label to make others happy. This left me feeling trapped in a box. I understand what it’s like to want to fit in and be accepted, but labeling yourself can limit your future.

When you try to conform to a specific category, it creates an internal resistance to change. Additionally, being placed in a box makes it easier for others to dismiss your beliefs, which is the opposite of what you want. As our interests, practices, beliefs, and intentions evolve, it's important to remain open to change. Deciding to fit into a particular box can limit your growth and create resistance to new experiences and ideas. Instead of feeling pressured to label yourself, embrace the fluidity of your spiritual journey.
